FAREWELL SPEECH OF A FOOL
swedish conformity and love for authority

by Mikis Mazarakis

Dear friends,

It surely hasn‘t escaped most of you that I, and my daughter part-time, no longer reside in Sweden. Since I don‘t get to meet most of you on a regular basis, it may be that you have not yet received a full explanation of the reason behind this decision.  In case you‘re actually  keen on finding out, I hereby intend to disclose the true cause behind my own massemigration. I no longer consider myself to be a citizen honourable enough to live in this country. I am not Sweden worthy - to put it more strikingly.

The foundations on which this proud nation is planted has during the past year revealed themselves as so beautiful, so true, so close to perfection that I perceive them almost as if were they written by the hand of our very creator. Or, to be more correct, it doesn‘t have that much to do with this nation, but rather about the ideological conception of who is man, what is life, what is the nature of universe, around which our societal system is built that this nation, Sweden, has chosen to adopt - and is executing almost perfectly.

It is this ideology, these pure, rational, eternally true interpretations of man, life and the world, which this system represents, that I - until now - have not learned to appreciate and behold with admiration, dedication and a bottomless wonder over their shimmering and utterly spellbinding beauty.

These insights have given rise to a such a violent flood of feelings of dishonour for having doubted the veracity in this ideology and the inner good contained in this system, that I‘m no longer able to look myself in the mirror without experiencing an immediate need for a self-induced exile deep down in the deepest depths of my wounded soul. Not only was I doubter, I even had the nerve to question whether what we get to learn really is the truth and if the society which we are constructing and letting our dear children grow up in actually is as goodhearted as it claims to be.

The shame of having questioned all of this tortures me into tears. I now carry the burden of this shame on my shoulders, almost as if it were a mountain. My efforts to never accept a statement only for the reason that it has been stated by someone who claims to possess the truth is of course a clear indication that I probably suffered from some sort of severe confusion. But now I have been liberated from this dehabilitating condition. To all of you that have helped me become aware of the grandeur of this system, the pride of this nation, the destructive nature of questioning, I would like to say thanks. Thank you very much. Thank you for leading me onto the right path. To all of you who refuse to realize the grandeur of this system, the pride of this nation, the destructive nature of questioning, I would just like to say stop. Stop with your nonsense. Stop denying these eternal truths. Stop defying authorities. Stop arguing, stop your discussions, stop questioning the laws, rules, theories, and above all, stop questioning facts.

This nation will never reach its potential splendour as long as its citizens - no matter how few they are - have tendencies to, totally on their own initiative, try to find the most basic causes to why the world is working as it is working, and in whose interest it is working this way. Sweden will never become a united nation, in the full sense of the word, if all of you who are  occupying yourselves with this herecy can not learn to just let the questions go. Learn to say, “Well, things are the way they are because that is how they are.” Or when your children ask difficult questions, “Well, things are this way because those who run the country and those who are educated and those who work with this and those with the ability to construct complicated linguistical sentences and those with respectful positions and those with the authority to make decisions that can change the life of someone they will never have to get to know, these people say that this is the way things work, so then it should be this way, why can‘t you understand that?”

The road to liberation is easy. As soon as you take up this attitude towards the world around you, you will see that everything will become easier. No longer will you have to be glanced at. No longer will you have to risk being rejected. No longer will you have to feel maladjusted in social situations. Instead, you will be liked. You will be accepted. For the first time, you might experience the indescribable pleasure of being in harmony with your social environment instead of being in conflict with it. And correct me if I‘m wrong, but isn‘t it harmony that we all long for?

Here is an example from my own life. I have recently signed a wonderfully worded and legally binding contract that tells me exactly how many days I can spend with my daughter every month. I just have to tell you how good it feels to finally have let go of my scepticism against legally binding contracts and societie‘s inexhaustible referencing to our law book and all of its rights and obligations as the ultimate way to solve a conflict. It is not until recently that I realized that these contracts actually work very well, extremely well even, kind of like giving your malfunctioning relationship a miracle cure. Before, I had this crazy idea that a rational and argumentative dialogue would be a better method to overcome differences. On top of that I believed, which might have been even yet crazier, that it might be wise to take a questioning stand to the judicial system and its representatives, in particular when the decision they have as a job to make concerns a person which they have never met and never will have to meet.

I kind of thought that it might be interesting knowing exactly what it is these lawyers are refering to when they that in fact, it is they who in the end know what is the best for the child, and not its parents. Finally however, I was brought back to my senses, whereupon I abandoned the underlying theories allowing ideas like these to arise in one‘s conscience.

I had come to see the absurdity in my ambitions. I understood the irrationality in questioning the judicial system whose groundwork are the highly thought through constitutional laws that, according to the Swedish parliament, are meant to to dictate the rules and conditions of our society.

Earlier, I couldn‘t see the crystal clear logic in the fact that the very oldest of our constituational laws says that what in the eyes of many is the most honourable position in our society is only to be inherited within one and the same family, forever, while every other law is supposed to follow the idea that we are all equal. I also found it quite peculiar that it had been established, in this oldest of our constitutional laws, that both the king and queen are obligated to admit the evangelical teachings as their faith in order to keep their official position, while all other laws, who our lawyers, these brave knights of justice, are supposed to work in accordance to, speak about every human‘s right to freedom of thought and freedom of faith.

In addition, I found it a bit odd that this constitutional law, which has been untouched for almost two hundred years, says that our dear princes and princesses only are allowed to marry whoever they want, as long as this someone is approved by our completely democratically elected government, and at the same time - at least if I‘ve gotten it all right -the rest of the law book is supposed to partially work as defence for people who are not allowed to love and live with the person that they love and want to live with.

When studying these laws, I used to sense a hint of failing logic in them. But this doesn‘t happenany longer, and the reason is simple - I no longer study the laws. Why should I, or anyone else for that matter? These laws are here to protect democracy. And democracy is here for my own good. For the good of the people. For the good of all. For the good of my daughter. So why question them? My deepst thanks to all of you who have made me understand the fruitfulness in, instead of studying and scrutinizing, just say, “Thanks. I‘m so thankful that we don‘t have the same laws as in Mocambique. Imagine how much worse our situation would be if we were to have their laws instead of ours. Thanks. Thank you Sweden for your impeccable judicial system and the justice that it every day gets done.

In a similar fashion was I to such a high degree that I also thought it was wise to take a questioning stand towards the swedish psychiatry, whose ideas of the road to wellbeing contributes to set the standard for our legislation and thereby our social apparatus as well. It is with shame that I tell this, but I used to doubt these psychiatrists actually knew what made us happy and what made us unhappy, to the extent they claimed to.

Obviously these were all nothing but groundless assumptions. For example, one of the many intellectual blunders that I commited was to try to show the absurdity in the psychiatric establishment‘s unshakable belief in its role as societie‘s gateway to wellbeing, by refering to working methods such as the lobotomy. Up until not more than forty years ago, this surgical method was frequently used by the psychiatry to cure symptoms like anxiety and other “unhealthy thoughts”. The procedure was to lift the eyelid of the patient, push in a chisellike instrument above the eyeball and then thrusting this right into the brain in which one then whisped the chisel around the area of the left lobe in order to cut off the nerve fibres. When this was done, the chisel was removed and the operation complete.

The foremost advocate of lobotomy admitted that the method destroyed the personality, but also claimed that in order to be relieved from anxiety “… one needs to sacrifice some of the virtues, the driving force, the creative soul.” It wasn‘t long before the swedish psychiatry and its openminded practicians embraced these groundbreaking ideas and put them into work, convinced that this method could effectively make sure that the “superego”, located in the front lobes, would not have so much influence over the rest of the brain, thus enabling the patient to be relieved from anxiety and guilt. Just a few decades ago it was widely considerd within the psychiatry that the human conscience was a sickness, and fortunately there were many who trusted them blindly, without wasting time on recreational activities such as questioning, for example. In Sweden, the lobomic operation was performed on around 4500 fortunate citizens (of which about one sixth deceased as a direct result of the operation), surpassed by only USA and England. A small sidenote is also that the founder of lobotomy was awarded with our noble nobel prize in 1949.

The swedish psychiatry has many other numbers to be proud of, as well. One of the most impressive, in my view, is the fact that Sweden actually ranks as far up as number two (silver!) among countries that have been systematically sterilizing persons for deviate behaviour. Unfortunately we didn‘t beat Nazigermany, but on the other hand, this may have been too much to ask. It is not until now that I realize what a goofball I for so long have been, when I trying to argue for the necessity of always investigating which rational, scientific and ideological grounds that the people who claim possession of the truth about health and wellbeing, use when they make their assumptions and statements - and with these have the power to force us, the faithful small people, to change accordingly.

Unfortunately, we no longer practice lobotomy in Sweden - or, yes we do by the way, thank goodness. We have, as the only nordic country, still not excluded the method from established practice. Nowadays it has a more flattering name than before, “Capsulotomi” or “Cingulotomi”, which are names that, in my humble opinion, expresses the humanity of the method more satisfactory.

Of course, just like everything else, the psychiatry is in a state of constant change and I don‘t think there‘s even the slightest trace of doubt regarding the fact that it is changing for the better. By now, I assume most of us has gained knowledge of the fact that the psychiatry has learned to use a method, which - believe it or not - is even more effective for curing anxiety and  almost all other mental illnesses.

Research has reached such unimaginable heights that one can now actually prove that chemical compounds, created in laboratories and then turned into pharmaceuticals, can be used to free us from basically any possible troublesome psychological condition. Fortunately, we‘re also blessed with a media climate with true health awareness, in which the players figth relentlessly to convey the truth and never be bought by big companies with equally big economic interests, and almost daily tell us about these new pills that within a few days can relieve us from worry and anxiety - and everything is of course, as always, scientifically proven.

These revolutionary pills, I‘ve now come to understand, are possibly one of the brightest success stories and most valuable crown jewels of modern science. I used to be so disillusioned that I wandered around on this planet with the assumption that our wellbeing is directly dependent on our community, our environment, our lifestyle, our conception of the world, our way of interpretating the outside environment and how we interplay with it, and our way of interpretating the environment of our conscioussness and how we interplay with this, but was I wrong or what..! How many hours have I not wasted trying to improve and refine these abilities hoping that it would lead to a better health, when all I needed to do was to pay the local pharmacy a visit, get a can of psychodrugs and then chew on these for a few weeks and thus reach better results than with my obsolete methods. Just imagine the amount of time and energy that I could have saved had I just realized this earlier in my life. Then perhaps I would have earned enough money to get that lcd-screen that I‘m still dreaming of, by now. But I have been brought over to the right track and my gratitude for this is greater than the greatest grand canyon there is.

I am grateful for having finally understood that it is the psychiatric establishment of this system which knows what makes me happy. I am grateful for having understood that it is to this psychiatry I should go when I need to make decisions concerning my daughter and her future. It is by putting an end to the questioning of these wellmeaning truthtellers that both me and my daughter will reach happiness. With these words I would like to announce my profound gratitude to all of you whose tenacious persevering persistence has resulted in my conversion from the treacherous mud of question to the bold blessing of acceptance.

To be completely fair, it is not just to our judicial system and psychiatric establishment that I wish to aim my gratitude. I would like to take it one step further and give nothing less than a standing ovation to all loving institutions and authorities that make up the core of this glorious society. Without the principles that you so faithfully follow, communicate and instill in us all, the downfall would certainly be near for this nation, whose justice, freedom and tradition I will spend the rest of my life infusing in my shameful heart.

I would like to thank media, who is explaining to me what it is that‘s really going on out there in the world. Thanks for telling me that an invasion of Iraq would make the world a safer place. Thanks for telling me that the root of all evil is found somewhere down there in the Middle East. Thanks for telling me that war is fought between those who hate freedom and those who love freedom. Thanks for telling me that war is fought between those who claim that this god and those who claim that it isn‘t. If it weren‘t for your independent and investigative reporting, then I would have been completely unaware of these facts. I used to think that money and power were the real reasons behind all wars, and yes, as also you can most likely understand, things probably weren‘t really right in the head of mine.

Thanks to all you media moguls as well. You are truly doing the people a favor by dominating all means of masscommunication. Thanks for the system which allows that you take out all alternative possibilities of interpretation of what‘s happening in the world and the reasons behind it. All these alternatives don‘t provide us with anything but confusion. I believed before that the many alternative interpretations could contribute to a more nuanced conception of the complexity of the problems, which in turn could increase the probability of actually solving them, but thankfully I‘ve now left this twisted point of view behind me. The fewer alternatives, the better, is my current standpoint. The best would be if it was but one family controlling all the reporting to and from the whole world. If that was the case, everything would truly appear understandable, unquestionable, wonderful.

Thanks also to the police force who protects this opressionless society from the opressed. Thanks for beating those who have been beaten their whole lives. Thanks for protecting the system which allows a proportionately extremely small number of people to possess all real power and push down on those who have no more than the illusion that all of us actually have the same amount of power, you know, this is in fact a democracy. Without your rights to beat, shoot, abuse, deprive one`s freedom - and all of this with protection of the law - this steady social construction could risk being altered, which for obvious reasons would be devastating.

My deepest thanks also to the swedish military for having succeeded in becoming the world‘s ninth largest weapons exporter. Thanks for selling rifles, among much else, to the opressive regimes of Burma and Kambodja and thanks for selling laser aims, among much else, to the very united states of america and the great great british in their war against Iraq. Thanks for helping these advocates of truth and virtue to exterminate the evil of the world with military means. When my daughter grows up, I will tell proudly tell her that my dear mother country actually contributed to making the world as beautiful and peaceful as we were all hoping when the decision was taken by the superclass of the world to invade yet another country with the ambition to not only stay in power, but also increase it. And thanks to all of you who continually pointed out to me how tiresome I was to always question everything. Without your help, I probably would still be cluelessly strolling around with irrelevant remarks, such as the one that the diffusion of the conception of Sweden‘s trademark neutrality is a magic trick of such a rank that it would make the breakouts of Houdini look like peanuts in  comparison.

Thanks also to our educational system which is really doing its best to stimulate our children‘s curiosity, thirst for knowledge and joy in learning. Thanks for making sure that the majority of the children for twelve years actually most of the time go to school with a big smile and leave school with a feeling that it probably wouldn‘t have been possible to have spent the past twelve years in a more constructive, learning and developing way. Thanks for not, like they do in so many other countries, using the term education as a pretence to make these small miracles believe that the point of living is to produce for the system, live for the system, be grateful to the system, and to all costs defend the system, and by that transforming themselves to a kind of product which is bought and sold on a brutal and insulting labour market. Consequently, my deepest thanks to the swedish educational system for rejecting these ideas and instead really doing your best to help all children be as healthy, strong, happy and intelligent as only possible. Thanks for seeing all children, and not just the ones with priviliged living conditions. Thanks for having figured out how to support, inspire and enlighten. I will not be the slightest worried when I in a few years will be forced to put my child in your hands. Thank you.

Thanks to this system, for creating a public space where those who sing the prettiest are allowed to sing and those who sing the worst are forced to shut their mouths in order to protect us from the risk of damage to our hearing. For example, the fact that all of these grafitti artists still haven‘t understood that they are completely tonedeaf is, I suppose, not just proof of them being vandals, but also intellectually handicapped ones. All that talk about the public space belonging to everyone, that their spray cans is a means for personal expression in a society where personal expression is close to extinct, that something can be art even though it‘s not for sale, even though it‘s not legal, all that talk is just jibberish and flibberish, and on top of that, all those screaming, colorful paintings are nothing but ugly - and no one could really, with the hand on the heart, claim the opposite.

There was a time, a long time ago, that I stood on their side. But if you ask me now, I would say they should all be put behind bars, right away, right now, to time to waste. I think we should continue to only give access to public space to those with absolute pitch, with millions and billions on the bank account. Their arias about skin lotions, fashion magazines, dandruff schampoo, mircowave ovens, american movies, americamusic, americaartists, americapeople, beautiful people, fit people, happy people, and the way we can become as beautiful as these beautiful people, as fit as these fitpeople, as happy as these shinywhiteteethsmilinghappypeople, all these messages are really like candy to both eye, intellect and soul.

Thanks to this system for always surpassing itself in pushing up the tempo on everything, nothing excluded, which has been a major contributor in creating the spirit of these times, characterized by abbreviations, simplifications, notices, slogans, fat headlines, news in brief, top ten lists - everything made for our own good, so that we don‘t have to waste energy on nuanced reasoning and broad thinking. If it weren‘t for this tempo, then perhaps we still wouldn‘t have understood the meaning of the motto that any statement with truth value (or was it entertainment value? I can‘t really remember, but I don‘t think it really matters…) can be said in one sentence. This sentence should preferably be very short. Powerful. Straight on the point. Nothing weird. Nothing excessive. Four or five words. Maximum. And then it‘s very effective to add some sort of sound effect in the background, like, KABAAM!, or something with similar dramatic effect. If it weren‘t for this tempo we would perhaps risk destorting our intellects with in depth news reporting, source critical information searching, discussion based conflict solving, argument based communication, and - dreadful thought - writing of personal letters of over thirty thousand characters and reading of personal letters of over thirty thousand characters. My sincere gratitude for having a system that doesn‘t allow us to drown in the trench of reflection and contemplation.

Many thanks to this system also for creating a labour market which really makes all of them who give almost half of their wake hours and two thirds of their lives to work, to really feel seen, appreciated, valuable. Many thanks to this system for making most of us spend most of our time either hustling for money, dreaming of money, worrying about the lack of money, waste money, buy money, sell money. Imagine the hideous scenario of after a day at work having enough time and energy to spend just one more hour per day thinking about such trivial questions as “Who am I?”, “How am I doing?”, “Can I help my loved ones do better?”, “Why does the world look this way?”, “Is everything true that I get to hear in media and in my surroundings?”, “Am I really the one in charge of my life?”, “Why does it feel like society is treating me like a machine and not as the miracle that I really am?”, “Is this way of living really the best for me?”, “Is this system and this ideology really what I want my daughter to grow up with?”, “Is there perhaps another way of living which possibly could improve the conditions for my daughter to be able to become a more harmonious person.

Thanks to all of you who have refused to stop point out to me that all these questions, and all attempts to answer them, will eventually come to worsen my life. Now that I have finally come to insight about how much better it feels to just relax. To do like the fish you know, just go with the flow, just hop on the bandwagon, without thinking so much, just trusting that one‘s faith lies in good hands, the hands of this system.

It feels like I could keep on praising this society, this system, for eternity, but then I would have the risk at hand of digressing from the original intention with this letter. For that reason I will know return to what I wrote in the beginning of this letter, namely my immense shame in for so long having criticized and questioned this society, this system. It is because of this that I choose to no longer live here. This country is just too good for me. Of all the reasons mentioned above it would just feel weird for me if I was to be allowed to walk the streets of Sweden, if I was to receive all or even some of the good which here is to receive, if  I was to reap the fruits of the society in which I have never myself planted any good seeds. That is why i run. That is why I am deeply grateful for, without any pressure, having signed this golden contract telling me exactly how many days per month that I can be with my daughter. I promise to never corrupt her with the same crazy ideas that for so long have corrupted me. For her I will forever preach all of that which this system has always preched for me, and that I haven‘t listened to until now. There is no need for you to worry, on this you have my word.

If I can one day forgive me, if you can one day forgive me, if Sweden can one day forgive me, then I might consider the possibility of a return to this holy country, even if it would be for just a few days, or perhaps a few hours even. To live here again feels unthinkable. No confession could wipe out this cardinal sin that I am guilty of - to always question everything, to always search a rational base for the thoughts and theories that I am expected to blindly follow, to never believe someone for the sole reason that this person claims to represent a structure of ideas which the same person claims is based on the truth.

All this questioning, I now realize, has made people around me upset, has caused conflicts, has disturbed the harmony, and now I apologize. From now on I will quit. To begin my quest for forgiveness, I will share a little secret that will help you identify the people who work in the way that I used to work - people who are against us, and not with us. For it can be difficult to know for sure when one is dealing with a person who wants to overturn this system instead building on it. I used to be that person, and now I would like to give you a theory about this.

If what a person does or says in some way or another makes you upset, a little angry, a little uncomfortable even, then there is a big chance that you‘re dealing with someone who is working against this system, this ideology, your ideology, someone who we - at any cost - shall keep away from finding a place in our civilized society. You may often not be able to actually identify exactly what it is in this person‘s words or behaviour that makes you upset, a little angry, a little uncomfortable, but this is not necessary. It is a waste of time for you to try to understand the reason behind this, since those feelings that have awakened inside you are far more reliable than any type of rational argument.

However, now I‘m not talking about something as frequently encountered as new thoughts or ideas. Everything is still in order if you think new thoughts or reflect over new ideas, if you change opinion, if you don‘t agree with everyone around you, as long as no uncomfortable feelings arise in you. It is totally okey for you to every now and then go on a few intellectual excursions, as long as these take place within the lines for what this system has says are acceptable thoughts and ideas. These excursions are harmless and not seldom even good for you.

What I‘m refering to is rather the thoughts and ideas that are not only unfamiliar, but make you feel uncomfortable as well. This combination of unfamiliar thought and uncomfortable feeling is a clear indicator that the idea which has intruded your consciousness without permission is threatening to change your conception of the world. This is what is harmful. To let anyone or anything change one‘s conception of the world is a sign of weakness and is to be avoided.

Some unfamiliar ideas are quite easy to dodge. For example, “There is a gigantic fourheaded cat hiding behind the planet Jupiter deciding who is going to win the lottery this coming sunday.” This thought is certainly probably unfamiliar, but since it doesn‘t seem to stand on a rational ground, I don‘t think you have any reason to look at it as a threat to your conception of the world.

But it becomes a bit harder with thoughts and statements that on a intuitive basis seem to contain at least some degree of truth. For example, “The societal system which currently prevails both in Sweden and the rest of the western world doesn‘t really have that much to do with truth, love, freedom and democracy - despite the fact that these messages are constantly being broadcast in the incessant and omnipresent information flow. This foundation of this societal system has rather as main purpose to make sure that the current global distribution of power, which makes the majority of all people on this planet spend most of their lives producing for a relatively very small minority of those with power, whose foremost interest is to keep their financial riches and their powerful positions, and thanks to these material and immaterial assets they have an enormously unproportional influence over the time, thoughts, energy and life of the majority of the people on this planet.”

It is these kind of statements that you should be careful with. It is these kind of statements, if reflected upon, if read again, if thought about, if not instantly rejected, that can penetrate themselves into the depths of a conscioussness and shake its very foundation and eventually even make the whole conception of the world collapse as if were it a house of cards. It is these kind of statements that we, together, have to make sure to exterminate. It is these statements that let you know that you‘re dealing with someone who is against us and not with us. When you encounter these people, one good way of reacting is by saying, “Get out of here! Piss off!”, because they are almost like dogs, all of these instigators and provocateurs. They bring nothing good. Their sole ambition is to put obstacles in the way of this unparalleled refined machinery which we have entitled the democratic society.

But there are other methods as well (or collective defense mechanisms for the maintenance of social structures, if one is to give a more nuanced description) to marginalize these people and thus make sure that their ideas is never rooted in our country. One way is by silence, by not answering anything they say, write or do. Just be silent. Pretend you don‘t hear. Pretend they don‘t exist. Another way is by taking advantage of something which these people hold close to their heart, their child for example, and say something like, “If you continue like this, you risk losing custody of your child.” If we, all of us, from now on make use of these methods to just a little higher degree than what is currently being done, then I am convinced that within the near future we will have succeeded with the achievement of having pushed these people and their instigating ideas to the periphery of society, and thereby having ensured that our system, our ideology, will forever prevail.

With these words I would like to wrap this letter up and say an official farewell to you and your country. I hope that you understand me better now, just so that you don‘t have to walk around wondering. I have decided to leave Sweden and dream of one day attaining a worthiness high enough to come back. One beautiful day I will perhaps be able to say - without shame - that I am a citizen, a swedish citizen. Instead of, like now, feeling like a weasel, a villain, who didn‘t just stir things up, but made them mouldy as well.

Always with love, always from the heart, always with the deepest devotion,

- Zorro
